Car insurance: Progressive vs. State Farm?

I'm currently with Progressive and have been very pleased with their service: I was in an accident in August and the entire process was very smooth and took little effort on my part. I worked with one local agent, dropped my car off at the Progressive repair center where they had my rental waiting for me, and returned the rental there when I came to pick my car up. Plus I never have to wait long to talk to someone when I call. However, I'm newly married and have found we would save a considerable amount by moving my two cars to my husbands policy with State Farm as opposed to moving his car to my policy with Progressive. Please let me know what type of experiences you've had with State Farm and if you would consider their service as excellent as I have with Progressive. Even if State Farm is cheaper, it won't be worth the savings if their service is crummy. Thanks! I forgot to mention that State Farm did ask me about the accident and it was included in the price they quoted us. We had to make a choice by March 1st and considering the service and corespondence we received from each company during our time of consideration, Progressive was the hands down winner. It took State Farm almost three weeks to get a quote for us and every time we got ANY info from them, it was because we made the call. They first said they had to ask me about my accident in August, but no one ever called to ask, so I called and the lady said they'd be back to me by the end of the day. Three phone calls from us and week later, they finally gave us something. With Progressive, I worked with the same girl, and she even made appointments to call me at 7pm two days in a row and kept them. The one day she was out sick and even had a coworker call at our appointed time to let me know that she was out that day. I really think Progressive values our business more.

  1. I'm surprised State Farm is cheaper. I was with them and believe me if there is a problem they don't work with you and your rates go up. They must not know about the accident you were in because it usually doesn't matter whose fault it was your rates are higher when they quote it. Maybe take State Farm for 6mos or a year and when the rates go up get a quote from progressive again.
  2. I would advise you to go with Progressive. We had State Fart Insurance and everything was fine until, we needed them. They put us through HELL for over 7 months with sub-standard repair work and a car that was ruined. We had to get rid of it and get a new one at our own expense. The car was brand new too. I've read a lot of horror stories about Stale Farm. Go with Progressive.
  3. I'm surprised State Farm is cheaper than Progressive, really surprised. I never had a good experience with them. I was hit by one of their insureds and the adjuster was rude and hateful. Progressive has worked hard for their reputation, they are a great company from what I can tell. I was hit, yet again, by one of their insureds and I had a much better experience...kinda like the one you had. I was seriously impressed, but not impressed enough to leave Geico. I really do not suggest you go with State Farm, I would stay with Progressive or look around. I highly suggest you stay away from Unitrin Direct as well. About 3 years ago I switched my Auto Insurance Coverage to Unitrin and it was a nightmare! I hope this helps in some way! Good Luck!
  4. OK - seriously - State Farm's trademark is their customer service. Progressive is not a bad company, but their rates are geared toward a higher risk market. And their claims service has not always been so great - they may be improved now, but when I dealt with them a few years ago it was shoddy at best. Quite a few garages that I know won't even work with a Progressive claim. I have had SF since I was 16 (now 26, married, with 2 kids). My dad has had SF since he was 16, my grandfather has had SF since 1957. We have all shopped around every once in a while - can't find anyone to beat our rates - or the service they provide. Plus, SF has so many other products - life and health insurance, a bank, etc. All or most of your insurance and financial needs can be met at one place. State Farm claims service is second to none - if you are not satisfied, they do whatever is in their power to accommodate you. Of course, you can't please every one all the time. I have been in an at fault accident, had my car vandalized, actually had a car stolen while on vacation, and been in a not at fault accident - every incident went smoothly. And, hey, everyone is human - if there was something I was unsure of or thought might be wrong, I could call the claim rep or my agent and they would explain it so I understood or correct a mistake if there was one. Go with your husband and sit down with someone in his agent's office and see how you feel about their service. Ask questions about the claims service, etc. I would absolutely recommend you go with State Farm - especially since the price is better!
