Auto and Car Insurance

Car insurance?

I am trying to get a quote for car insurance, but am a bit stuck. I got my South African licence in 2002 and exchanged it for my UK one October last year. When they ask you how long you have held your licence....do I say 5 years or less than 1 year. Does the South African one count....I really hope so. We drive on the same side of the road and everything. Thanks

  1. You have been driving for 5 years it doesn't matter what county it was in.
  2. Inform the insurance company of this as some of them take it into consideration but some will only take your uk driving license experience. My mate works in insurance and im sure she has said something about it before
  3. i dont think it will count coz the 2 nations under go different driving tests and training
  4. confused.com will sort you out good luck
  5. First thing is you should have exchanged your licence within 12 months. The answer will vary depending on your insurance company, there is no hard and fast rule.
  6. I would definitely contact a local insurance broker - preferably one that you can call in and speak to the staff. They will probably check with their insurers to confirm which will acept the period of your driving licence (and no claims bonus? Did you have any in South Africa or could your insurers there confirm claim-free driving experience. You are in great danger of accidentally failing to spot the questions on a proposal form about - length of UK residence.
