Auto and Car Insurance

Does anyone have some firsthand experience with AIG auto insurance? Particularly claims, good or bad.?

  1. Short time exposure to AIG, no claims. The price was good, they kept sending me direct advertising, so I signed up. They were great until they had me as a customer. At renewal time, with no claims, the policy went up a considerable amount. I had no agent to talk to, only an 800 number that was less than helpful as to the reasons why the policy had increased. If you called back you got a different person with a different answer, so I dropped them and found a local agent.
  2. I was just recently involved in a car accident (not my fault) but since the at fault driver was under insured, I have had to report the claim to my insurance company (AIG). I have uninsured and under insured motorist coverage. My experience is this: Claims were not handled promptly. I had to wait 2 wks before I could get everything settled. At the end of 2 wks, it was declared that my car was a total loss. They then "tried" to low ball the offer they would give for my car which is basically brand new (2 yrs old) with very low miles for its age. However I got an independent appraiser and got a higher settlement at the end. Be advised that this is only MY experience and may not be the same for everyone else, but it pays to get your own appraiser because most insurance companies would rather not pay out a big sum of money. The good part is their rates are low.
