How do I go about getting my own vehicle insurance?

I'm 19, in college, and I'm still on my mom's vehicle insurance. I pay for my own though. Do I just call my insurance provider (Progressive) and get them to set it up for me or does my mom have to do it because she is the policy holder? Will it be cheaper for me to stay on my mom's policy? TIA!

  1. The motor vehicle insurance is based on the value of the vehicle so the age of the owner/user has nothing to do with cost/premium. The name on the policy document will always be the name which appears on the Owner book provided by dealer at the time of registration of vehicle. You can always be a payor of premium. If u want the insurance on your name, the ownership has to change which your mother should agree to do.
  2. I am not sure what you are asking exactly, so If you are going to be on your mom's insurance then get her to phone them up and tell them about it. If you are going to get your own as per the heading of this question then find a cheap insurer and buy your own insurance. You might be able to find cheaper than progressive. Just check out a good comparison site, you get to save much time as the site will provide quotes from all main insurers. Here's some sites you can get quotes from, one of which will also return quotes from progressive btw: http://123automotive-insurance.solutionsarticles.com/hometownquotescom?id=7873 http://www.cheapcarinsurance.esuperfind.com/insurance.php?id=091 there's more in google, hope I helped
  3. If you want to buy your own insurance, your name has to be on title of the car. Since you are 19, it is much cheaper for you to be in your mom's policy and you are the listed driver (you of course should reimburse your mom for the cost of insurance if you are able). As you grows older the insurance premium will lower provided that you do not have accidents or tickets.
  4. buy one
  5. I would suggest you call several companies and compare pricing in both situations. As an individual or on your mothers insurance. You won't get arrested for asking. :) In regards to setting up the insurance, if you remain on your mothers poilicy, she will need to be the one to contact them initially if any changes are to be made unless the company has received prior approval from your mother for you to make changes. Hope this helps.
