Auto and Car Insurance

Iowa state residents only, please... (vehicle insurance)...?

I have a friend that came from Iowa and as I understand it, she claims that a vehicle being over so many years old does not require insurance. So, she comes to the state of NY and I'm inclined to believe that this is not recognized in NY and that all vehicles in the state of NY should and will be insured regardless of which state it's from. Please give me some info on this before somebody gets killed.(like children ??...) mainly the ones that I care for.

  1. The laws governing auto insurance are determined by state legislatures. Not by the federal government. Which means that each state individually has general requirements. Unfortunately for your friend New York has one of the most stringent insurance laws out there. She would be required to carry liability insurance on her vehicle regardless if it's registered in Iowa. If she is driving through any other states in the United States she is obligated by law to carry minimum insurance limits. She is at risk for having her car impounded or in the worst case scenario losing everything she has for an accident that is not covered under insurance.
  2. Your friend is wrong, all vehicles in Iowa require insurance
  3. you gotta have insurance here in iowa...she is full of it...just doesn't wanna pay for it...there are a few states that don't require it but iowa isn't one of them...BUT just because she doesn't have insurance doesn't mean she is gonna jump in her car and go run over babies....
  4. Your friend does not know what she is talking about...you need to be insured in ANY motorized vehicle...and have a current inspection, as well.
  5. Well, I'm not from Iowa, but nonetheless I'm qualified to answer your question. Iowa car insurance laws Iowa is a tort state, which means that drivers are financially responsible for the damage and injury they may cause during an auto accident. Liability coverage helps insure you against these costs, and it is required in Iowa. Iowa auto insurance laws require liability coverage of 20/40/15. (That's $20,000 per person for injuries you cause to the other party, up to $40,000 for all, and $15,000 for any damage that you cause to the other driver's car and/or property.) However, these are only minimums, and higher levels of protection are strongly recommended, especially if you have assets to protect. After all, accidents can get very expensive, especially if injury is involved.
