1. I suppose you could probably sign up for a plan then cancel it.
2. You may be able to find some insurance companies that have special temporary policies (similar to a rental insurance policy) but usually you will have to just purchase a regular policy and then cancel the coverage when you do not need the coverage anymore. Be careful though about going too long with a gap in your auto insurance coverage history because that is not looked upon favorably be insurance companies when they determine your rates.
