Need a temporary insurance for a second car - how to do that in the best way?
Hi, I have just bought a new car but I have not sold the old one yet. I am entitled to 9 yrs no claim bonus but I cant use it on the new car as it used on the previous policy. What I have done is I cancelled the old policy (effective from Sunday) and will buy a new one for the new car from Monday morning so I will be able to use my NCB. Now I want to buy a cover the second (old) car for a while as well (third party only) but I'm hoping to sell it so I need a 1-month (or 2) policy. I've found Direct Line will be one of the best for my new car. They also match NCB for the second car if the first one is insured with them. If I take a pay-monthly plan from them and if I cancel after a month or two (once I've sold the old car) - will it work like that? Is the monthly instalment all I'll need to pay? I've just found that buying a new car and still having the old one is a real pain. I've checked so called short term policies but they are tooooo expensive (i.e. £120/month vs. £400/year) :/

- Do what I've always done in the same situation...phone the office nearest you, speak to a real human being and tell them the exact situation...if you tell them about it all in advance, they are usually very helpful and will often bend the rules regarding minimum term and cancellation policy just to get your future custom for the new car.
- I am with Direct Line and when I needed to change my policy on a new car I also needed temporary cover on the car I hadn't yet sold and they do this for you. You can get a month's cover for an extra charge of about £15 so talk to someone at Direct Line and explain this to them and they will set it up for you no problem.
- I work for State Farm insurance & this situation happens every day with customers. They purchase a new vehicle & are planning to sell the old one soon. Every insurance company is different, but this is what I would recommend my policyholders to do: If they have an accident free discount on their current policy, then we would replace their current vehicle with the new vehicle on that policy. This way the accident free discount will transfer to the new car. As far as covering both vehicles, you would have 14 days of automatic coverage from the date of purchase on the new vehicle & you would also still have 30 days coverage on your old vehicle (from the date of purchase of the new vehicle). For example: You purchase a new car on September 1st & replace your the vehicle on your current policy with that new car. Your old car would still have coverage until September 30th. If you need coverage past Sept 30th on the old car, you would need to write up a new policy for the old vehicle. Hope this helps.
