Is there anyway to get a vehicle off of my insurance without turning in the plates?
My ex-boyfriend borrowed my car, it is titled, registered and insured by me. I have no idea where he is and no idea how to get in touch with him. How can I get the vehicle off of my insurance if I can't get the license plates?

- I don't know what state your in,but yes cancel the insurance and the plate should stay with the car.If you want your your car back, report it stolen.state to the police that he took it with out your permission, and your filing now, because you gave him time to return it. Get THE INSURANCE OFF OF IT FIRST.
- If you hold the title, getting the car off of insurance is as easy as calling your insurance company and telling them to take the "year, make, model" off of your policy. I would be more worried about what your ex-boyfriend is doing with your car. If he gets into an accident there is going to be trouble that comes to your doorstep, too, as you are the registered owner.
- Well, he didn't steal it because you allowed him to use it. But if he kept it beyond a reasonable time, you can call the police and report "unauthorized use" of your car. You don't want to just drop insurance and let him keep your car I assume, you want your car back, don't you? Let the police find it and they will call you and allow you to come and get it once they do find it. After you have reported the unauthorized use, you won't be responsible for anything he does to the car, like parking tickets or the like.
- Well, I personally wouldn't take it off of the insurance because you are still the owner of the car & you gave him permission to use it. If he has an accident YOU can & probably will be liable for the damages as the owner of the car. The first thing I would do is report this to the police to see what they can do about it. If they can report it stolen, make a police report & then report it to your insurance company as a stolen vehicle - explain the EXACT situation to them, be 100% up front with what is going on. They will let you know how to proceed & if you are able to claim it as a stolen vehicle on your insurance (if you have comprehensive - other than collision - coverage). The only way you wouldn't be held liable for an accident is if you are allowed by the police to report this vehicle as stolen. If you get paid by your insurance, then & only then you delete it from the insurance (on the day after the car is reported stolen). If the vehicle is recovered, you notify the insurance. If you have been paid for it, the insurance company will come get the car, if you were not paid and there were no damages, the claim will be closed. I hope this helps you.
