Is your U.S. vehicle insurance valid in Mexico?

My family is planning on going to Mexico on last minute trip. We are driving and I am curious is my vehicle insurance valid in Mexico in case I get in an accident?

  1. No, but some insurance companies, rare though, offer foreign coverage for an extra fee. We always just get some cheap coverage at the border crossing so that we are legal in Mexico.
  2. No but you can call your insurace company and see if they offer across the border coverage
  3. not really. I travel in Mexico and purchase from this company for the time i am in Mexico. Try it http://www.sanbornsinsurance.com/
  4. there are "special" restrictions in Mexico Your insurance is not valid there. You need to stop just this side of the border and get spacial mexican insurance. All large border crossings have several carriers of insurance in the USA. San Diego to San Ysidro have a few look in the yellow pages just before you cross.(5-10 miles) Dont get caught with guns, ammunition of any kind or quantity or drugs/pot or you will have a LONG stay in Mexico under the most unplesant circumstances. good luck
  5. You should by Mexican insurance at the border. I think it is required of all foreigners who bring their vehicles into Mexico. I travelled to BCS Mexico and always buy insurance when I cross the border. It relatively inexpensive and gives you piece of mind. The Federalizes can impound your car if you don't have it. But beware nobody there has insurance. I was hit (fender bender). They made sure i had insurance but could care less about the Mexican national that hit me!
  6. As an Insurance agent I would recommend you check with your agent to see if you have mexico coverage because some policies only cover you 10 miles inside the border. I recommend you by mexico insurance its cheap and they offer all kinds of assistance if you have an accident in Mexico.
  7. Most insurance companies will insure you up to a certain mileage in mexico ( ask your company ), however, this includes only theft and damage to YOUR car, you MUST purchase mexican liability in order to avoid any legal problems.
  8. Sometimes...I know that State Farm will cover an insured vehicle a certain number of miles into Mexico and Canada. Best to ask your agent or read the policy.
